Why the Périgord Noir?

The Périgord is made up of four areas — Noir, Pourpre, Vert and Blanc — each with its own identity. Located in the southeast of Dordogne, the Périgord Noir is the most visited area, renowned for its oak forests, contrasting landscapes, and the richness of its heritage.

Between the valleys of the Dordogne and the Vézère, historic sites, outdoor activities, and major prehistoric landmarks, the region attracts visitors all year round. An ideal destination for camping, it offers many accommodation options and pitches, including for motorhomes: discover our Dordogne motorhome itineraries. Very green and crossed by numerous rivers, Dordogne also boasts an exceptional heritage, with one of the highest numbers of listed historic monuments in France, not to mention its iconic gastronomy (truffles, walnuts).

It is also home to several Most Beautiful Villages of France, including Belvès, Monpazier, Beynac, La Roque-Gageac and the unmissable Sarlat-la-Canéda, the medieval jewel of the Périgord Noir.

A rich cultural heritage

The Périgord Noir brings together an exceptional wealth of sites: castles overlooking the valleys, major prehistoric landmarks, and spectacular chasms offer a true journey through time. Added to this are beautiful parks and gardens, as well as a renowned Périgord gastronomy combining foie gras, truffles, walnuts, and local specialities. All these assets make the Périgord Noir a complete and truly immersive destination.

The Markets of the Périgord Noir in Dordogne

Traditional markets

They are the same in Dordogne as elsewhere: usually held in the morning, their main purpose is for food shopping.

  • Monday: Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil (April to October) and Beynac (mid-June to mid-September)
  • Tuesday: Cénac, Le Bugue and Salignac (April to September)
  • Wednesday: Montignac, Siorac, Hautefort, Sainte-Nathalène, Sarlat and Carlux (July and August)
  • Thursday: Domme, Meyrals (June to September), Monpazier, St Julien de Lampon and Terrasson
  • Friday: La Roque-Gageac (May to September)
  • Saturday: Belvès, Le Bugue, Montignac, Sarlat and Villefranche-du-Périgord
  • Sunday: Marquay (June to September), Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac, Calviac (late June to late August), Daglan, Carsac (mid-June to mid-September), St-Cyprien and St-Geniès

❤️ We recommend the Sunday morning market in Saint-Cyprien. It is large, very attractive, and only 10 minutes from the campsite. It is one of the most beautiful in the region, making it one of our top suggestions for discovering local specialities.

Summer night markets

Usually held in the evening, during the high season (July–August), these markets mainly feature food stalls. The aim is not so much to shop as to eat there. Producers cook their products on site and invite you to taste them. Large shared tables are set up by the local councils so you can dine on the spot, and it is not uncommon for the evening to include live music.

  • Monday evening in Montignac and Château des Milandes (late June to early September)
  • Tuesday evening in Le Bugue, Saint-Amand-de-Coly, Bouzic, Le Coux and Villefranche-du-Périgord
  • Wednesday evening in Aubas, Rouffignac-St-Cernin, St-Geniès and Belvès (late June to early September)
  • Thursday evening in Auriac-du-Périgord, St-Léon-sur-Vézère, Hautefort and St-Cyprien
  • Friday evening in Valojoux, Les Eyzies, Salignac and Le Buisson (late June to early September)
  • Saturday evening in Audrix and St-Pompon (late June to early September)

❤️ We recommend the Wednesday evening market in Belvès to discover dishes and products from the Périgord.

Tourisme en Dordogne

Outdoor Sports and nature activities

Dordogne offers an ideal natural setting for active outdoor holidays, and La Lénotte campsite makes the most of it thanks to its wooded surroundings and direct access to nature. Very green (45% forest in the Périgord), the region is perfect for hiking, with 2 hectares of forest adjoining the campsite and treetop adventure courses nearby.

When it comes to water, rivers are at the heart of activities: fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding. The Dordogne, navigable and well known, is located only 3 km from the campsite with a developed beach, while the Vézère offers superb canoe routes. A small river, the Nauze, also runs through the campsite and adds to its charm.

Finally, Dordogne offers a wide range of outdoor activities: walking, horse riding, cycling or quad biking, climbing, via ferrata, caving, not to mention hot-air balloon flights and introductory flights. A bonus near the campsite: two golf courses to discover very close by.
