Heritage and culture in the Dordogne: discover the richness of the department
Of course, there is the famous Sarlat — located just 25 km from the campsite — but that’s not all. Tourism in the Périgord is boosted by no fewer than ten villages classified among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France”.
This is no small feat. Among nearly 36,000 municipalities in France, only around 158 villages hold this prestigious designation. Having ten of them in the Périgord clearly demonstrates the beauty this department offers. As you wander through the streets of these Périgord villages, we strongly recommend enjoying the region’s traditional restaurants for an even deeper immersion in local culture, especially if you stay with us at our family campsite located near the town of Sarlat.
The number of villages classified as “Most Beautiful Villages of France” in the Périgord is largely explained by the department’s strong history and culture. In some of these villages, you can discover castles with remarkable architecture, many of which offer unforgettable panoramic views.
Tourism in the Dordogne does not stop at gastronomy, castles and villages — our region is full of surprises to charm visitors. We are also fortunate to have an impressive prehistoric site.
So, while exploring the Dordogne’s villages, don’t miss a visit to the prehistoric caves. It is an activity that appeals to both children and adults and will immerse you in prehistoric times for a day.
